So this is my latest entry for the SCD Contest :iconstrictlycomedrawing:

The idea for this months contest was Mythology, but more importantly symbolism in mythology. I thought very long about how to do just that considering the Judges asked not to just draw a God/Goddess, but to USE symbols to portray them. So here is mine...

I chose to combine several Goddess's and their symbols because each of these Goddess's are alike in many ways...

All have a bird symbol or are Bird Goddess's
each of them are War deity's/fertility Goddess's
each one is a well known Goddess in there Culture

Now a review...

The Morrigan or Mor-Ríoghain
Is the Celtic/Irish Goddess War Deity
She is often interpreted as a triple goddess hence the triple Goddess symbols beside her.
She most often appears in the form of a crow or Raven,
Collecting the souls of the dead for the afterlife.
I put Blackthorn above her.

Athena
Is the Greek/Roman Goddess War Deity
She is often seen with an owl/ some think she may have been an owl or sea-eagle and changed her form.
Her symbols include a roman helmet Her armor given to her by her father Zeus, a shield with Medusa the gorgons head, some believe Perseus gave her the shield as a votive gift and a serpent is above her.

Freyja
Is the Norse/Nordic Goddess War Deity
Seen here as a Falcon, one of her many bird forms.
She is well known for her Necklace Brísingamen, her Golden war Boar Hildisvini Who some believe to be her lover transformed and her chariot of cats.
Although she is NEVER mentioned with a weapon of any kind She is cited as receiving half of the dead lost in battle in her hall Fólkvangr and riding on Hildisvini to collect those lost in battle. I have given her her four runes. and tears above her as she is know as the "Weeping Goddess" with tears of gold.

I have written each of their names below them in their native script.

~Yes I am VERY sorry this is a picture of it, I still have no scanner and the deadline is Midnight tonight, I wish I had a scanner to show more detail and color.~

I remember something in Susan Cooper's "The Grey King" which said that the three oldest creatures in the world were three birds, one of them being an owl. I thought that was another interesting mythological angle on this piece.

You have a good economy of color.

Thank you Beautiful, The Morrigan reminds me so much of you.
